Question of Style

Let’s talk about STYLE.

I’m not sure if I have much of a distinct style. This could mean a few things. I don’t have a distinctive attributes to my work like Van Gogh or Monet. Maybe my visual taste is bland and it shows. Or perhaps I just haven’t found my style quite yet.

I think part of this is because a lot of my paid work has been more documentarian in nature. Documentary films can tend towards a more “natural” look versus the “stylized” look of more artistic commercials or narrative films.

What am I going to do about this?

Recently I’ve been revisiting my vision for my filmmaking work and what I want it to be, visually. While beautiful imagery of any style can never replace a good story, visuals can support and further illuminate the meaning behind the stories we tell.

One of the artists I’ve been inspired by lately is @temi.coker. I first discovered one of his pieces on Pinterest and recently found the rest of his work on Instagram. His brightly colored and highly graphical work is fantastic – do yourself a favor and go check out more of his beautiful art.

This image is my feeble attempt to reflect a small taste of his imagery in the hopes that with time I’ll be able to bring similar vibrancy and life to my own work in some new and interesting way. Who knows, maybe that will become part of my style someday. :)✌🏼
